Witcher 3 Remastered Leads a Packed Gamescom Opening Night
Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 dominated the day, and the announcement that cut through most was CD Projekt Red's free remaster of The Witcher 3. Eleven years on, The Witcher 3 Remastered overhauls the game with improved combat and is a no-cost upgrade for existing owners — a rare piece of generosity from a major studio. CD Projekt Red also teamed with Blizzard to bring a Geralt skin to Diablo 4 and add The Witcher 3 to Battle.net, tying the two studios' audiences together in an unusual cross-promotion.
The showcase itself drew mixed reactions — Kotaku called it a display that did a lot of games dirty, while Push Square singled out Showa American Story as the standout in a field of samey trailers. Other reveals included LEGO Skylines, a city builder from the Cities Skylines team, and two PS5-bound titles catching attention for their style: Arabian fantasy 1001 Threads of Mizan and gothic Victorian adventure Silver Palace. Nintendo Switch 2 owners of The Witcher 3 also got good news separately — a free claim on the Switch 2 remaster.
Away from Gamescom, Unity's CEO acknowledged it has been a difficult time for console hardware but expressed confidence that costs will come down and console games will continue to thrive, citing GTA as evidence. The hunt for the GTA 6 leaker is reportedly closing in on its target. And Solasta 2 is adding multiplayer and warlocks in its next update, giving fans of the tactical RPG something concrete to look forward to.
